PPP hoisted ‘flag of democracy’ against dictatorship: Sherry Rehman

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ms Sherry Rehman said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has hoisted ‘the flag of democracy’ against dictatorship in the country and termed the impeachment motion as ‘democracy vs dictatorship.’ “We have laid foundation of democracy and now it is upto the members (parliamentarians) to respond the voice of their conscience,” she said while speaking in a private television (GEO News) programme ‘Capital Talk.’
Sherry Rehman said the ruling coalition has adopted a constitutional and parliamentary path to bring a major change in the country.
PPP wanted country’s transition to democracy in a peaceful way aimed at upholding supremacy of the Parliament and rule of law, she said.
She said the ruling coalition was much comfortable in number game and even have crossed that line.
A sufficient number of opposition and independent members are willing to vote in favour of the impeachment motion so that they should be remembered in parliamentary history of the country in good words, the minister added.
“We have put our entire rule at the stake on this major issue,” she said adding as far as charge sheet is concerned he (Musharraf) held the constitution in abeyance twice, did not address the parliament, weakened the federation despite the facts that a President is always a symbol of federation.
To a question, she said as PML-Q was stating that it would not support using of the article 58(2)b, it means that he (the President) should resign gracefully following the examples of the presidents in the United States who preferred to resign for the stability of the country when impeachment motions were sought against them.
Commenting on a report of US-based journalist Ron Suskind in his book ‘the Way of the World’ regarding reported telephonic conversation between President Pervez Musharraf and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto last year, which was bugged by the CIA, the Minister said so far it is a speculative report.
The government would look into the matter as some important and sensitive things have been discussed in the book, she added.
