
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday said the National Assembly Standing Committees are the linchpin of parliamentary system, which will be further strengthened to make their working more smooth and effective. The Prime Minister stated this as he had a meeting with Speaker National Assembly, Dr. Fehmida Mirza in her Chamber here at the Parliament House.
The Prime Minister and Speaker National Assembly discussed early elections of Standing Committees in the National Assembly, as it will further smoothen the function of the Parliament.
The Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction that members of the Assembly had taken keen interest in the recent budget session.
He briefed the Speaker about his recent visit to USA and his meeting with Speaker of US House of Representatives, Ms. Nancy Pelosi along with her delegation at Capitol Hill.
The Prime Minister said that he has invited the American Speaker to visit Pakistan. He further said that he is thankful to the support extended by the American Speaker to the democratic government in Pakistan.
Prime Minister Gilani also apprised the Speaker of his meeting with US Senate Foreign Relations Committee comprising of 13 Senators under the leadership of Senator Joseph Baden at Capitol Hill in the historical Senate Foreign Relation Committee Room.
He said that they extended full support to the ongoing democratic process in Pakistan for which he thanked them.
The Prime Minister briefed the Speaker of his visit to Sri Lanka to attend the 15th SAARC Summit.
He said that Sri Lankan leadership considers friendship with Pakistan vital and it is evident from the fact that the Sri Lankan Prime Minister himself is the President of Pak-Sri Lankan Friendship Group in the Sri Lankan Parliament.
The Prime Minister said that he also participated in the birthday party of Sri Lankan Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara alongwith the Speaker’s family at the Speaker’s House in Colombo.
The Prime Minister while talking about his visit to China said that he stressed the Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao for more people to people contacts and the establishment of Pak-China Friendship Groups within the two Parliaments in order to give more boost to existing warm relations between the two countries.
