ICAPP TROIKA SAYS FOOD AND FEUL PRICES CAN DESTABILIZE ASIA

Manila, August 4(APS): The International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) Troika, in a joint statement, has expressed serious concern at the continuing food and fuel crisis that has hit various Asian countries. The statement was released in a meeting held in Manila on August 4th. The Troika comprises former Speaker of the Philippines Parliament, Jose De Venecia Jr, Chairman of ICAPP, Ambassador Chung Eui-yong, Co-Chairman of ICAPP and Senator Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Secretary General of Pakistan Muslim League (PML) and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of ICAPP.
The joint statement warned that economic hardships generated by the food and fuel prices would create uncertainty and unrest among people, which could, in turn, destabilize the democratic political processes in Asia. It would also spawn inequalities in Asian societies, the ICAPP troika.
In this context, the ICAPP Troika urged all Political Parties to take innovative and proactive initiatives to meet these serious economic challenges facing Asian societies. The ICAPP Troika said that at the forthcoming 5th General Conference of ICAPP in Islamabad in October 2008, the Asian political leadership would endeavor to prepare an action plan that can seek a way out of this growing food and fuel crisis. It also urged the United Nations, the G-8, the European Union and the OPEC to play an active role to defuse these crises by presenting speedy solutions to these problems.
The ICAPP Troika also requested Asian political parties, which are planning to participate in the Islamabad ICAPP Conference, to present concrete suggestions in this regard, since ICAPP is the most representative forum of political parties in Asia, representing 92 political parties from 46 Asia-Pacific countries.
