
ISLAMABAD:The Asia region has great potential to make progress and overcome problems due to rising food and fuel prices by pooling up their resources and adopting a joint strategy. This was stated by Speaker National Assembly, Dr. Fehmida Mirza, who presided over the meeting of Asian Region in the 54th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Session, held in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. On her the request, the Asia group observed one minute silence to pay tribute to Late Ms. Benazair Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, for sacrificing her life for the cause of democracy, promotion of world peace and her endeavors for women empowerment. The Asia group also adopted unanimously, the resolution for sending a request to Commonwealth General Assembly to observe one minute silence during its annual session to pay tribute to the Ms. Benazair Bhutto (Late). The house also unanimously elected Kiramatullah Khan, speaker NWFP Assembly, in place of M Aslam Bhootani, Speaker of Balochistan Assembly, whose term has expired as a regional representative of 54th CPA Executive Committee. The house also unanimously adopted the resolution to recommend to the Commonwealth General Assembly to change the group name of Asia to South Asia. The Pakistani delegation later on attended the Second Plenary Session of the CPA wherein the delegation took active part. In a response to a question raised by Nafeesa Shah MNA and member of Pakistani delegation, regarding role of the Commonwealth to curb terrorism, the Secretary General Commonwealth said that Commonwealth was greatly sensitive to the issue and was very eager to help Pakistan in strengthening Election Commission, resolving Constitutional issues and to help combat terrorism in the country.
