Pakistan arrests nine suspected suicide bombers

LAHORE, Pakistan - Police have arrested nine suspected suicide bombers and seized bombing jackets and explosives in the eastern city of Lahore, officers said Friday.
The suspects from the South Waziristan tribal belt bordering Afghanistan had set off to carry out suicide bombings in Lahore and other cities in Punjab province, Lahore police chief Pervez Rathore told a press conference.
"On information provided by an intelligence agency, we have arrested nine suspects and seized four suicide jackets, 10 grenades, two grenade launchers, two Kalashnikov rifles and explosives," he said.
He said that the suspects were also wanted for a November 2007 suicide attack against an air force bus in the town of Sargodha in which at least eight air force officials were killed.
Crimes Investigation Agency inspector Qaiser Mushtaq told AFP that the suspects were travelling in a bus posing as Islamic preachers and had packed the suicide bombing equipment in their bedding.
Taliban militants have threatened to launch suicide attacks across Pakistan after the military launched an operation against them in troubled Swat valley.
