
LAHORE: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman Saturday said the government believes in free media policy and has amended PEMRA ordinance to ensure free access to information . “Press and Publication Ordinance would also be scraped soon” said the minister while speaking at a seminar on ‘International Summit for Journalists Safety and Ethics’ organised by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and International Federation of Journalists at a local hotel.
She said free media is pre-requisite for strengthening democratic institution, ensuring good governance and running administrative affairs in a better way.
She said that access to complete ,correct and unbiased information is the right of every citizen and government would provide all possible help to journalists’ institutions in this regard.
She said that implementation of 7th Wage Board Award would be ensured to improve financial condition of journalists and dialogue with owners of newspapers and stakeholders are in progress in this regard.
She said the ministry of information has set up a Victim Fund for the financial assistance of journalists falling victim of any mishap while performing duties and insurance policy is also being introduced for it.
Underling the importance of code of ethics for media, the information minister urged all journalists organisations to play their effective role in its formation and implementation.
She stressed the need for unbiased,balanced and fair reporting of events as media was passing through a critical time in the country adding that putting curbs and introducing strict laws against media would not be good for its development.
